The Southern Province USA (SPUSA) includes Old Catholics in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Information on this page applies only to those within the SPUSA.

Clergy

If you are in any of those states and feel called to the life of clergy, we'd love to hear from you! We will never question your calling, but we also have a responsibility to lay people. So, with apologies, let's get some of the rules out of the way--

  • Few members of the clergy minister full-time. You have to have a job or be able to support yourself through some other means.

  • All clergy have to pass a criminal background check.

  • There are two ways to become part of the clergy:

    1. Seminary Training. Saint Wolbodo Seminary is our national seminary program. Saint Wolbodo offers classes for those who are preparing for ordination. Additionally, Saint Wolbodo manages our clergy continuing educational program, and offers educational opportunities for laity in our parishes and ministries.

We have both minor orders and major orders (i.e., incremental ordinations). The minor orders are Cleric, Porter (Doorkeeper), Reader, Exorcist and Acolyte. There is a transitional level: Subdeacon. The major orders are Deacon, Priest and Bishop. As a postulant or candidate, you progress through each minor order (subject to approval of the seminary rector and your bishop) as you work your way through the seminary.

    2. Incardination is for those who are already seminary-trained and ordained. We have quite a few members of the clergy who finally had enough of the weirdness of the mainstream, liturgical denominations, such as the Roman Catholic Church. We definitely are more inclusive, diverse and willing to work with you on your call to ministry. Please use the Contact Us form to get things started.
